Lack of forethought

Hello,

This post regards my BCR2000.

I set the global setting so that I can use Edit/Store/Learn/Exit as performance buttons instead of leaving them for manual programming usage.

Then... USB died.

So I can't get into manual setup to set the mode to S-4 to use the controller using the 5 pin midi.

  • Sometimes I can plug in USB and the USB detection light doesn't even come on, it's all dead.
  • Sometimes I can plug in USB and the USB detection light will come on, but the computer doesn't find the BCR in any application.
  • Sometimes I can plug in USB and the USB detection light will come on, the computer will see the BCR midi from USB, but no input will register into BC Manager, or ShowMidi, or  Midi-OX.  Further BC Manager doesn't find the when doing a controller search.  I can manually assign the midi input and output in BC manager in these circumstances, but nothing more can be done.

I have tested this with 3 different computers, and with multiple USB inputs on the 3 computers.  With many different midi cables.  I have also used a couple of different usb to midi interfaces to try to find the BCRs via 5 pin.  Still no joy.  BC manager can't do anything to this BCR2000.

I can attach the BCR via midi cables, put it into bootstrap mode and then load the firmware using BC Manager, but that does nothing toward fixing the issue.

I've got 2 BCR2000s in this identical situation, and another BCR2000 that is still working fine (and you can bet I set the global values differently this time).  So, am I throwing away 2 iterations of the best knob box ever because I've locked myself out?

I set the global setting so that I can use Edit/Store/Learn/Exit as performance buttons instead of leaving them for manual programming usage.

How EDIT etc. function isn't determined by the BCR's global setting, but by the active ("temporary") preset.
So all you have to do is temporarily prevent your "evil" default memory preset from loading upon startup of the BCR.
Section 22 of BC MIDI Implementation.pdf explains how to do this:
Hold the STORE and EXIT buttons while switching the POWER button on.
This makes the BCR start up with an "empty" temporary preset.
Then you can access Global Setup mode by pressing EDIT + STORE, and change the MIDI mode.

Hope this helps,
   Mark.
